A few weeks ago, she tweeted something about a new project in storytelling called The McKinnon Account. Because I am a laggard, that tab sat open, but unread, until yesterday, when I did finally sign up.
If you’ve played any ARGs (Alternate Reality Games) before, the mechanisms should be familiar to you, except without the interactivity.
The story plays out over the course of a few hours via email and text messages, and that’s all I’m really going to say about it other than that I loved it. It was very cool to have this narrative playing out in my inbox while I was going about my day’s normal work, and by the time I got the first text message, I was hooked. While stories are usually consumed at a pace set by the reader, and a short story can usually be finished in a single sitting, I found it incredibly effective to have the story play out in real time, its pace set by the characters in the story, rather than by how fast I can read.
